OLMEC

A distinguished American archeologist, Dr. Clarence Weiant, was on site in 1938 when the first stone head attributed to the Olmecs was discovered in Mexico.  Since that time, a number of heads were excavated together with other artifacts of seemingly African origin, and the debate ensued as to the ethnic origins of the civilization that left this mark.

After years of extensive research across multiple disciplines, Dr. Van Sertima revealed to the archeological world detailed documentation evidencing the presence and influence of black Africans as the ethnic tie to the Olmec civilization in ancient America in his ground-breaking book, They Came Before Columbus.  While allegorical at some points and scholarly at others, Dr. Clarence Weiant writes of Van Sertima’s work, “As one who has been immersed in Mexican archeology for some 40 years and who participated in the excavation of the first of the giant heads, I must confess, I am thoroughly convinced of the soundness of Van Sertima’s conclusions.”

From patterns taken from reliefs found on Olmec ruins, to symbols examined in They Came Before Columbus, our chapter on the Olmec focuses on this exciting transatlantic history and the interconnectedness of continents and people from across the globe.

Our chapter on the Olmec celebrates this exciting cross-cultural history and lost indigenous knowledge, only now being acknowledged.
